Who visits / buys / searches on the Internet

What is the motivation that leads them to make the decision?

What is the need, the want, the requirement that makes them take this step.

To start the answer, switch your mind back to the physical world of newspapers, radio and TV.

All these media provide information upon which a visitor makes a decision. The person likes or dislikes, agrees or disagrees with the news or programs presented and as a result people read different newspapers, change channels and switch stations.

So how is an advertiser to reach his or her intended audience, an audience that keeps changing its mind.

They take the shotgun approach.

Whoa you say, what is shotgun about putting an advertisement in the newspaper.

Consider a newspaper with 50,000 copies, 50,000 people will not see the advertisement. Most of the readers have no intention of buying or even considering the product. They are not pre-disposed to do so. They did not buy the newspaper to see the advertisement.

The advertisers approach is the shotgun effect, hoping a pellet will obtain a target.

There is nothing wrong with this. A lot of time, work and effect are placed on producing the advertisements. It is just the way things are done in the world of newspapers, radio and TV.

Enter the world of the Web and the rules are reversed. The customer becomes a bullet looking for an advertisement. They are a person looking for information. They are pre disposed to find something. They have a want, a need. They require something fixed, attended to. They want answers to their questions.

Does this make you think. Can the consumer find your business on the Internet and if they find you, is there enough information to permit them to make a valid and considered decision.

On the Internet can the consumer find you?

Forget everything - clear your mind - relax - reflect

There are four media not three

Print Radio TV and Internet

Each has a different audience.

A person obtaining information from the newspaper is not going to obtain the information from the radio. If they make a buying decision from the information obtained via the radio they won't make that decision by watching TV.

The person, who goes on the Internet pre-disposed to buy, is not going to get the information from the newspaper. They are on the Net looking for information, they don't surf, they are focused, they are a bullet looking for the target information.

So is it time to suck in a big breath and think. Are you providing the information the searching consumer requires and if not why not.

If you want the consumer to find your business on the Internet, what are you doing?

The Web, the Internet is not going to go away. If you want the consumer who uses the Internet to find you, you will have to make yourself visible to them.
