Insight and Motivation "The colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will work with people who are unmotivated. Edwin H Friedman" That was a tweet and I thought it was an interesting observation on our times. But what is insight, surely people have to be motivated to "obtain insight" therefore once they have "received the insight" how can it be said they are unmotivated But then maybe it means the insight is all around us, we have been advised, because it exists, but we choose to ignore it because it does not fit in with how we think the world should behave or operate, Or how we want it to. We cannot expect the world to conform to our set of expectations, as in the narrow sense of a retailer who opens the doors at nine, closes at five, puts an ad in the newspaper or on the radio and considers that is the only way how to attract business. Because that is how it was done in the past We live in a changing world and maybe the ignoring of this fact is the cause of the unmotivation. Somewhere out there is a quote about unmotivated people and what happens. Anyhow, I received a phone call from a local retailer wishing some information about Twitter, I thought this was nice because I had been thumping the cause of social media for some time and finally locally it had been recognised. (I'm not an expert, just someone who asks why does this work or not work) It turned out they has already joined Twitter so they were already motivated and the question was easy to answer. And in the conversation that followed they added a lot to my knowledge base. Some random notes from the conversation: "Facebook and Bebo from a main street retailer's point of view are unknown areas, what are the rules. It turns out that most retailers have kids (funny that) so ask them, You are not there to gate crash their party or follow them (stay away) but they are a mine of information and good at offering advice, they will want you to succeed. Just because social media is flavour of the month does not mean you should forget the Web and websites, people and potential customers obtain information from many sources. The retailer, a bridal boutique had already recognised this and had forged contacts with other businesses allowing brides to select from a wide range of styles. The websites www.ladyofthelake.co.nz and www.allurebridals.com The business may operate in a town with a population of 40,000 but their client base is both local and from out of town. And often because the bride and bridal party is being dressed / outfitted in the town, the wedding is held there, which is good for the caterers and motels." Later I had to leave for another appointment and later I thought did the caterers and motels realise that part their business originated because of the efforts of another business and the social media and the web Yes the world is changing, we have to see, not observe, gain insight and act. The fact that the ways to attract customers are changing should be motivation for people in business to change their ways. The web, the social media are not going to go away, they permit a potential customer insight into your business and how you can assist, the question is are businesses motivated to provide the information. The business above would appear to be on the right track. Contact Firstsearch |
