Changes Which business entity is likely to succeed, one that recognises, accepts and acts positively about the changes or the one that bans what they don't understand It is not uncommon nowadays to hear of companies, businesses and large entities placing or wishing to place restrictions on their staff using the Internet / Web and the Social Media. The motive for this is that such activities are not in keeping with their job descriptions, waste time and cost the business money. The websites or activities are usually mentioned or listed, and qualifying remarks normally take the form of it is ok to use the Internet if it is work related. I am not about to debate whether this is a good or bad approach, the Boss is the boss but it does raise a couple of issues about the changing world we live in. Does placing or attempting to place restrictions amount to acknowledging that the world is changing and the only way the company knows how to deal with the situation is to place a ban, and try to bring the situation under their control. They see the world as they want it to be, not as it is. I would venture to suggest that the entity has a company website which should be used as a marketing and advertising tool; therefore they wish people to visit, view and hopefully find the information in order to make a purchase decision. But in placing restrictions does the company acknowledge they cannot cope with the changing world and that they do not know how to present their website or use the business tools of the 21st century. Would the company not be served better if they recognized the reason why the sites they wish to restrict or ban are so popular and so gain an appreciation of how to do business in today's world. Maybe then, they in turn will become popular and become a most visited site. Workplaces are about people and those entering the work force have not known a time without the Internet/ Web. For a business to succeed it should employ the right people but if the right people find that the workplace is technologically vacant how long will they stay. We are at the start of one of the greatest sociological changes ever seen in history; it is a culture shock to many and changes will have to be made and accepted. To paraphrase Alvin Toffler's quote "The illiterate of tomorrow will not be those who cannot read and write, it will be those that do not learn. Maybe future employment advertising will carry the words. "Join us; we understand the changes that are happening" We are a firm, company or business that's wishes to go forward. We know we have good products and people want to buy from us. We understand our audience is fragmented and to reach them we will use all the business tools available and if that means we use the business tools of the 21st century, the Web, the Social Media. SMS and what is to come we will. ...........
