Thinking Up A Ladder

Or a case of lateral thinking, who needs the Web

I needed a ladder, not an uncommon need, ladders are very useful and never around when you need them, especially when you don't have one.

So the time is now. There were jobs to be done and the ladder was required. All I have to do is find the place that sells the ladder I require, like the price and buy.

Yeah right.

Living where I do and having a reasonable knowledge of who may have the item I require, I identified 5 or 6 stores. The problem being, they were not reasonably close to one another.

It would be a matter of driving to each, parking, looking at the selection, comparing prices, getting back into the car, driving on to the next store, very tedious, boring, and time consuming.

There has got to be a better way. Of course there is just hop on the Web. Key the word(s) "ladders" or more defining terms into the search engine format box and be presented with a list of who sells ladders, the pictures and prices. Make my selection and drive to only the one store and buy.

Easy. Yeah right.

Try it sometime. The Web has been around for some 15 years and still no ladders.

All right, you may say I'm being picky. I should read the newspapers, the flyers that appear in my letter box, listen to the radio and then I would know.

No. I am not going to wait to be told, Wait until someone tells me you can buy ladders here. I could be waiting months and then they may not have what I want.

I want it now, the information, who has the ladder I want and I don't want to drive all over town.

But it was a case of hopping into the car. Pick a store and hope for the best.

The first store: nope, a large tradesman's ladder or a small kitchen stool / ladder. They were awaiting more stock.

The second store: promising, something like what I require. What else is there.

See the problem in June 2005. This could go on forever. . Next Page
