Own, manage, operate, work in a business in Wanganui. Does your business, sport or organisation have a website

Can it be found in the search engines for the keywords or keyword phrases a potential customer may type into the search box if they wished to find you

A search engine friendly site is a customer friendly site

Any search engine works on the principle that a customer types into the search box, words or a phrase in the expectation that they will locate a business that has the information relevant to the enquiry they make.

Therefore it is incumbent upon a website owner to ensure that the information contained in the Title Tag (s) and Description Meta Tag (s) are relevant to the customer query and match the on page text.

Don't worry about the Keyword Meta Tag it is of little use to the Search Engines. Concentrate on the Title Tags (a different one for each page)

When a person keys an enquiry into a search engine search box, the search engine does not go out and search the Web, it searches its own records and if a website owner has not advised the search engines by way of the title tags that the site exists, a potential customer may not find what they are looking for

For example: a customer types in the word electrician wanganui and if the webpage title tag contains the word electrician wanganui, a match is made and the customer locates the business they require. Success all round.

But if the customer types in the word electrician and the website page although well constructed has words in the title tag such as, home page, (or) solar power, (or) for everything electrical, but not the word electrician wanganui, no match can be made.

Suppose the viewer was searching for a furniture removal company as they were moving to a new home. It is likely they will type into the search box the words furniture removals or furniture removal company, but suppose the company that could do the job for them had words in the title tag like: Transport You Can Trust, the company has just sabotaged their ability to be found. It is highly unlikely the customer would type into the search box: transport you can trust, when they are looking for a furniture removal company.

Also the words electrician, electricians and electrical are three different words to the search engines and will deliver different results. The same applies if a person keyed into the search box the word accountant but the site title tag contained the word accountants.

So website owners optimise your title tags for the words or phrases the customer is likely to type into the search box when they want to find you, and use different title tags for each page.

Use words descriptive of your industry or business, what you sell or the service offered, customers are looking for product and services

Some SEOs recommend that it's best to keep your title tag to 70 characters or less and separate title tags for each page

Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to show ads based on a user's previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. "sports enthusiast"). To develop interest categories, we will recognize the types of web pages users visit throughout the Google content network. As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the "sports enthusiast" interest category.

Research has shown the trend that more people use the Web than the back of a telephone book when seeking to contact a business. People are looking for information that is found more readily on the Web

And the businesses with websites, do they present websites that are search engine friendly. By this is meant is the website able to be found by the search engines, are the signposts present which say to the search engines, we exist, find, index, list us so the searching customer can find us.

If this process does not take place and there are no signposts in the code behind the site, a website is nothing more than a piece of paper that can be read electronically, a website which cannot perform its function of advising the searching public of the products and services offered by the business.

As we move further into the Internet Age a web presence is no longer "a nice to have", it is a commercial necessity, therefore websites must perform if they are to meet the needs of the customer.

An important part of our work is Local Search. The Web is global and searching is global but as customers are more likely to go online rather than look in a book to find information about and from local businesses we are prototyping and applying proof of concept to local search in Wanganui.

Potential customers are researching online so they can buy offline (overseas research statistics)

While having a website should be the preferred option for anyone in business, for many reasons this is not a reality so businesses wishing to reach the customer online are opting to provide information for others to publish on-line for them. They the business control the information, the advertising factor, and use a third party as a platform

Businesses that operate in Wanganui either solely or as a branch are invited to submit their websites to the google custom search engine. Please use the form to your left.

Businesses without websites are invited to view the options for having an on-line presence without a website Here

While our focus is on the businesses in Wanganui Region we do not dis-allow businesses from around New Zealand from listing with us. In fact it is encouraged as part of our on-going research. We welcome any enquiry.
