Jujitsu Wanganui

The Eagle Spirit Jujitsu has its head quarters in Wanganui. The Club teaches a unique mix of martial arts styles with an emphasis on self-protection rather than sports.

Whilst the Club still bases the majority of its syllabus around its original founding style of Spirit Combat International Jujitsu, it has incorporated teachings from other styles into its training to develop its own unique blend.

Each Grade is based around the students knowledge of Ten Forms, or techniques, along with their knowledge and execution of break falls, throws, blocks, kicks, punches, grappling, kumite, kata, and at the intermediate / senior level, weapons.

The Club style, and majority of techniques, are street orientated rather than arena based focusing on a strong hard-style self-defence aspect. There is also a definite focus on defensive rather than attack-based elements, where an opponents power is used against them; this also makes components of this style very suitable for children and women.

Sensei Robin Howard emigrated to New Zealand in September 1997 as the official national representative and coach of Spirit Combat International Jujitsu.

After a little time of personal orientation, he started teaching private individuals his martial art style, focusing more on the development of like-minded adults that might join him in his vision of bringing Spirit Combat Jujitsu in to New Zealand.

In January 1999, he started teaching his work colleagues and their families, and soon found a solid number of people interested in learning his style, both Juniors and Seniors alike, and so Wanganui Spirit Combat Self Defence Club was formed.

The Club progressed rapidly and soon attracted martial artists from other styles bringing in expertise and knowledge to share with others. In 2005, the Club was flourishing and decided on a new identity for itself and so the New Zealand Eagle Spirit Jujitsu was formed.
